TMJ Disorders – Pain

TMJ disorders/pain or more commonly known as ‘TMD’ (Temporomandibular disorder) refers to pathology within the jaw joint. This can develop when the disc lining the jaw joint begins to erode or move out of its normal alignment, joint arthritis, trauma/damage, dental work/surgery or clenching/grinding teeth.

What are the symptoms of TMD?

Jaw pain or tenderness (one or both sides)

  • Pain or difficulty when chewing
  • Facial pain/ache
  • Ear pain/ache
  • Jaw locking (difficulty opening or closing the mouth)
  • Headaches
  • Stiffness in jaw, neck, shoulder or upper back
  • Jaw popping or clicking
  • Toothaches
  • Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
  • Dizziness

How can a Chiropractor help?

TMD can be treated and managed using a non-surgical conservative approach. This refers to hands on techniques inclusive of internal/external massage, mobilisation and adjustments to treat the necessary areas. The treatment will be personalised to each individual patient as it will vary dependant on severity and underlying cause.

What are the benefits of treatment?

  • Pain relief
  • Restored jaw function
  • Prevention of future issues
