Exercise Physiology

Strength, mobility and movement coaching backed by science.

Our exercise physiologists design personalised programs to improve strength, mobility, cardio fitness and long-term health. Whether you’re recovering from an injury, managing a chronic condition, or working toward performance goals, we take the guesswork out of training with evidence-based exercise prescription and one-on-one support.

Assessment

Functional movement assessment to determine any movement issues. During this kind of assessment, the Exercise Physiologist will look at common movements linked to what you are struggling with and identify any weak links or incorrect movement patterns that need to be modified.

Strength assessment to determine muscle weakness or imbalance. The left and right side of your body will never be equal in terms of strength, this is called asymmetry. Strength imbalances occur from favoring our right over left and vice versa, over-training desired body parts over others, poor exercise program structure and over-training.

Cardiorespiratory assessment to analyse heart rate response to exercise. The EP need to assess the amount of effort that corresponds with a particular exercise ensuring you are not working over your tolerance level by an enormous amount.

Lifestyle assessment to determine daily habits that may be impacting your health such as exercise, sleep and work – are just a few examples. Most of what we do in our everyday lives is directly impacting our health, I mean, what else can it do.

Lifestyle Coaching

This involves education on how to improve your health by analyzing different areas of your life and making recommendations based on the information gathered. The time discussing these topics are vital in moving forward – ‘for something to change, something has to change’.

Many clients have underlying obstacles that include poor health choices which are contributing to their lack of strength and overall health and wellbeing. This is addressed through strategic planning to change your daily habits and make it as simple as possible to follow a consistent exercise health program that links with your weekly schedule.

Strength Training

A specific program designed based on your initial assessment will enable us to work towards improving your strength and conditioning. The purpose of this is to strengthen you in a functional manner (the way in which you perform your activities of daily living; ADL’s) this will help you perform your everyday duties with ease. One of the main benefits of doing this will also allow you some spare fuel in the tank to enjoy other hobbies without re-injuring yourself or exacerbate an existing injury.

Mobility/Flexibility

Using specific stretching and self-releasing techniques to improve your range of motion, in combination with your strength, will give you the benefit of moving your limbs (arms and legs and even spine) through range; for example, being able to raise your arm right above your head or even how far you can perform a side raise with your leg.

Reduced flexibility can cause parts of the body to sit in sub-optimal positions making it difficult to perform quick sudden movements/perform in high intensity classes. This results in further pain and stiffness and is usually the cause of injury/re-injury.

Mobility will allow you to perform tasks through range with no pain, repetitively through your weekly schedule. It will also allow the body to recover and repair before your next hit out!

Balance Training

Balance is the ability to have high kinesthetic sense, and knowing where you are in space and time will assist in allowing you to successfully complete a movement. Most of you will relate that to sport and performance, although it is equally important for a elderly person to acquire balance to reduce their falls risk.

You will be taken through unique balance focused exercises that will train your nervous system to keep your body balanced with any movement you desire. The exercises range from standing on one leg to balancing on a board while kicking/catching a ball.

Sports Based Training

This is for athletes who are either recovering from injury or looking to improve their overall performance. Many athletes lack the strength and movement qualities required to perform well at their sport, not because they are lazy, it caused by lack of tissue exposure to a graded (broken down) exposure to that of their sport.

For example, ACL ruptures have extensive and numerous rehabilitation components each ranging from 2 weeks to 3 months involving a range of exercises that progress with difficulty. Similar to the ACL rehabilitation, sprained ankles and torn groins require a lot of laterals (side to side/zig zag) movements that also consist of real-life scenarios i.e. involving soccer balls and distractions in the rehabilitation exercises.

Children/Kids Early Development

We have all heard or said “gee you’ve grown quick”. Children grow and adapt at a rapid rate making it easy for things to ‘just happen’ which has a lot to do with their developmental milestones. Generally, children can experience hip knee and ankle pain especially when they are participating in multiple sport and activity sessions. Other common presentations can include inward bowing feet, knock knees and a slouchy posture.

A simple way you can look at it is the body has grown quick making the bones of the body too heavy for the muscles to hold in place and in addition play sport whilst being at a disadvantage.

We work with young kids to improve their strength, flexibility and movement as they are in the developmental stages of their lives avoiding any maladaptive compensatory strategies that could have been avoided with early intervention. We also tackle the critical issue of childhood obesity to reduce the risk of severe health complications that can be avoided through effective exercises. At this level many of the exercises are performed in a game format to increase engagement and participation.
